HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is one of the most common STDs today. There are more than 100 different types of HPV which can all cause different symptoms. Some of the low risk types of HPV can cause genital warts in the infected person while some of the more serious types of HPV can cause cervical cancer. There is no known cure yet for HPV although the symptoms associated with it can still be treated.
Depending upon the type of HPV there might or might not be any visible symptoms. Usually the symptoms only occur after two or three months of contracting the infection. The symptoms might even appear after years of contracting the infection. While treatment of HPV is still not possible, treatment of genital warts that are caused because of HPV can be done easily with the help of prescription medicines as well as surgery.
Genital warts might be difficult to diagnose since they are not always visible and cannot be seen with the naked eye.
• Genital warts can occur in different sizes and shapes.
• They might look like flat white patches.
• In some cases they might be bumpy and might appear like tiny white bunches.
• Genital warts can occur in both women and in men, the warts might appear in the genital area, in the urethra, anal region on and inside the genital areas as well.
Genital warts once they are visible might cause several other symptoms including:
• Excessive itching in the affected area.
• Irritation and inflammation where the warts develop.
Although some of the symptoms of genital warts are similar to those of herpes these are two totally different medical conditions. Genital warts might be different in the way they appear in men and women.
In women genital warts might occur in the below mentioned conditions:
• In women genital warts might appear on the vulva, cervix or the vagina.
• Genital warts in women can also appear on the cervix and inside the vagina which most women are generally unaware of and can only be detected by a doctor with the help of a few tests.
• In pregnant women the genital warts might have severe symptoms. The warts might be larger in size, painful and may lead to excessive bleeding. There is a small chance of the infection spreading to the baby during the pregnancy itself or during vaginal delivery of the baby. In certain cases the doctor might recommend a cesarean delivery.
In men genital warts are of slightly different nature:
• In men the genital warts can occur on the penis itself, around the penis or in the anal and crotch area. In cases where the genital warts appear on the penis itself there is a slight risk that it might lead to penile cancer although it is rare.
• Men who indulge in anal sex can have genital warts in the anal region which might also lead to cancer of the anal canal.
